Happy Halloween

We celebrated Halloween a day early here.

The day started off with some pumpkin carving.

Margaret carried her little pumpkin friend all around as Mom and Dad worked on carving the big pumpkins.

It received lots of loves.

She worked on "decorating" it with a capped marker.

She also found it fit quite nicely inside Daddy's pumpkin.

While Margaret napped (with her pumpkin), Fritz and I baked some cookies and cupcakes for the neighbors. Ok, he baked them while I busied myself cleaning up after him. I did pipe some bats, spiders, and jack-o-lanterns on the cupcakes, though.

My rather loose interpretation of a bat.

My blobby spider.

Then I made some butternut and acorn squash soup for our traditional Halloween "Ode to Squash" dinner.

Margaret woke up in a horrible mood, so I wasn't able to get many pictures of her in costume.  She did hold it together long enough to take our treats around to the neighbors, thankfully.

Here's our Little Red.

The pumpkins came out once the sun went down.

I finally got Margaret's away from her long enough to paint a face on and feed him to the scary cannibal pumpkin.

We enjoyed our soup while we handed out ghost suckers to the trick-or-treaters.

All in all, a very fun Halloween!

Food Waste Friday 10/30

For previous food waste Fridays, click here.

A bit of mystery baby food (how long has that been lurking behind the Spanish olives?), a splash of pasta sauce left over from our sweet neighbor bringing us dinner when I had a sciatica flare-up, and about 1 cup of brown rice. Moldy brown rice smells so. bad.  I wish I had never had to learn this.

Harvest Fun

We visited Staheli Family Farm today.  We had such a fun time.

We went on a tractor ride out to the corn maze. Margaret started out like this.

But soon started this.

Before degenerating to this.

And this.

She was happy to be on her feet again when we reached the corn maze.

She had no interest in being carried.

She much preferred to walk.

She even gave it a shot going solo on the uneven terrain.

She played in the hay.

We had some awesome sweet potato fries.

Then Margaret played on the swingset.

And hung out in a big box of dry corn.

She loved watching the chickens.

She resisted all of Mama's photo op attempts.

We went home exhausted and happy.

Bonus shot of Margaret trying on Mama's sunglasses when we got home.

Wordless Wednesday: Halloween Decor

As a followup to my Fall Decor Wordless Wednesday, here are some of our Halloween decorations:

One of six homemade luminaries.

Our family of scarecrows.  One each for Fritz, myself, and Margaret.

Mine is always disgracing the family by falling down drunk in the front yard.
